Water district alerts

The alert system is a strategic tool designed to provide proactive control over the water district's infrastructure. It allows you to monitor critical events, optimize water resource management, and respond quickly and effectively to any anomaly detected in the system. This transforms supervision from a passive task into active, preventive management.

There are two fundamental components of the system: the alert and notification management panel, and the process of creating custom alerts, which let you tailor monitoring to your specific needs.

Main panel#

The alert panel is the centralized command center for all your system's monitoring activity, giving you an immediate overview of the status of your alerts, as well as a unified access point to manage both the configured alerts and the notifications that have been received.

To access it, select the “Alerts” option in the platform's main menu.

Notifications view#

When you enter the alert panel, the default view is the notifications view. This screen presents a summary of recent activity through a list of the latest notifications and a series of cards with key performance indicators to assess the state of the system at a glance:

  • Unread notifications: highlighted in red, these cards show the number of notifications that have not been viewed.
  • Received (Last 24 hours): Provides a total count of the notifications generated by the system during the last day.
  • SMS sent: Shows the current quota of text messages (SMS) available for sending notifications and those that have been notified through this system.
  • Active alerts: Indicates the total number of alerts currently configured and running, compared to the total created.
  • Not received: Quantifies the alerts defined but not received.

Within the panel, you can perform two actions to manage notifications.

  • Mark as read: To indicate that you have seen and processed a notification, click the “view” icon (represented by an eye) associated with it. The notification will no longer count as unread.
  • Once a notification has been marked as read, the delete icon (represented by an X) will appear. Clicking it lets you permanently remove the notification from your list.

Alerts tab#

Selecting the “alerts” tab opens a complete list of all the alerts that have been created. This view lets you centrally manage each of the active or inactive alerts through a table organized as follows:

  • Alert type: The specific type (Pressure, level, flow, etc.), which can be filtered.
  • Custom alert name. Clicking on the name lets you access the alert's monitoring panel to check its status and history.
  • Status: Received or not received.
  • Limits: Shows the values or threshold defined for that alert to trigger.
  • Activation switch: Lets you enable or disable the alert individually. Disabling it temporarily stops notifications without having to delete the alert.
  • Actions menu: View, edit, and delete the alert. If it has not been received, the option to resend it will appear.

Creating a pressure alert#

Notifies you if the pressure in a pipe rises above or falls below the thresholds you define. Essential for detecting leaks, blockages, or overpressure that could cause a burst. Only one alert can be defined per pressure sensor.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click the “Create alert” icon.
  2. Select the alert type “Pressure alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the sensor from the list of pressure sensors you have installed.
  5. Select the alert type between “Notification” if you want to be warned when values fall outside the defined threshold, or “Notification and stop” when, in addition to receiving a notification, you want the alert to generate a closing event on an output.
  6. If you selected “Notification and stop”, fill in the “Output to close” field with one of the actuators registered on the same Atlas as the pressure sensor.
  7. Select the limits: lower, upper, or both at once.
  8. Select how you want to be notified.
  9. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Creating a digital input alert#

Digital input alerts are designed to notify you in real time about state changes in these inputs, such as flow switches or pressure. Only one alert can be defined per digital input.

State change#

This basic alert notifies you when a digital input changes from its normal state.

  • Select the digital input: Choose from the drop-down field among the list of digital inputs installed in the water district. The system will only show inputs that do not already have an alert configured and will inform you of their default state (Normally open or normally closed).
  • Assign a name to easily identify the alert.
  • Define the notification state: Select whether you want to receive a notification when the input changes to a specific state (open or closed).
  • Notification settings: Select the recipients and the notification method, as detailed in the corresponding section of this manual.

State change with actuator supervision#

Lets you correlate the state of a digital input with the state of an actuator (pump or valve), making it possible to detect abnormal conditions or confirm operations, which is extremely versatile.

  • Select the digital input and the state for which you want to be notified.
  • Select an actuator: Choose from the list of elements installed in the water district.
  • Define the actuator state that, in combination with the digital input state, will trigger the alert.
  • Notification settings.

Creating a level alert#

Level alerts are simple and powerful. Their purpose is to notify you when the level measured by the sensor exceeds an upper threshold or falls below a defined lower threshold.

  • Assign a name to identify the alert.
  • Select the level sensor: A list of available sensors that do not already have an alert defined will be shown.
  • Set the limits: Use the “switches” to enable defining the lower limit, upper limit, or both. Defining both creates a safe operating range.
  • Enter the values: Specify the numerical values for the enabled limits, expressed in the unit defined for the farm.
  • Configure the notifications and save.

Creating a 4-20 sensor alert#

Notifies you if the reading values rise above or fall below the defined thresholds. Suitable for any type of generic 4-20 mA sensor.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “4-20 sensor alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the sensor from the list of 4-20 sensors you have installed on the platform.
  5. Select the sensor channel to use.
  6. Once both the sensor and channel are selected, the information about units and limits defined during its creation is displayed.
  7. Select the alert type between “Notification” if you want to be warned when values fall outside the threshold to be defined, or “Notification and stop” when, in addition to receiving a notification, you want the alert to generate a closing event on an actuator.
  8. Select the limits: lower, upper, or both at once.
  9. If you selected “Notification and stop”, fill in the “Actuator to close” field with any actuator registered on the platform.
  10. Select how you want to be notified.
  11. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Flowmeter alerts#

Creating a flow alert#

This alert is triggered when the flow detected by a meter exceeds the configured limits while the actuators remain open, excluding the loading and stabilization periods.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Flow alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the meter to monitor, from all those registered that do not already have an alert of this type. Once selected, the nominal flow defined at its creation will be shown.
  5. Set the loading time (ti). The initial time until the installation is pressurized.
  6. Set the stabilization time (ts). The time in which the installation reaches the nominal flow.
  7. Select the alert type between “Notification” if you want to be warned when values fall outside the threshold to be defined, or “Notification and stop” when, in addition to receiving a notification, you want the alert to generate a closing event on the actuators.
  8. Select the limits: lower, upper, or both at once. They must be lower than or higher than the meter's nominal flow, respectively.
  9. Select the actuators. Select at least one actuator to control the calibration times when it opens.
  10. You can add a master actuator (it must have been previously designated as such) and a regular one. Both must belong to the same Atlas as the meter.
  11. If you selected “Notification and stop”, these actuators will close once the established limits are exceeded, excluding the loading and stabilization periods.
  12. Select how you want to be notified.
  13. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Creating a misuse alert#

This alert is triggered and generates a notification event when a valve is closed and the meter registers a volume greater than the defined tolerance. It is a notification-type alert and will not perform any automatic action on the system.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click the “Create alert” icon.
  2. Select the alert type “Misuse alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the meter to monitor: The drop-down list will only show meters that do not already have an alert of this type configured.
  5. Select the tolerance to apply. This value represents the amount of consumption allowed to be registered after a valve-close command. This margin is useful to avoid false positives due to the time it takes a valve to close completely.
  6. Select the valve. You can select any valve on the platform.
  7. Define the supervision time after the valve closes. The time that will be ignored after the valve closes.
  8. Select how you want to be notified.
  9. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Creating a leak alert#

Detects the opposite condition to misuse: the meter is not registering consumption while the associated valve is open, which could indicate a leak upstream of the meter or a fault in the meter itself. Like the misuse alert, it is a notification alert.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Leak alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the meter. The drop-down list will only show meters that do not already have an alert of this type configured.
  5. Select the valve. You can select any valve on the platform.
  6. Define the supervision time: Indicate the time that must pass after the valve opens, with the meter at zero.
  7. Select how you want to be notified.
  8. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Creating a volume alert#

This alert is triggered when the volume detected in the associated meters is greater than the defined volume over a given period of time. It is a notification-type alert and will not perform any automatic action on the system.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Volume alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the meters to monitor, from all those registered that do not already have an alert of this type.
  5. Set the volume limit.
  6. Define the start date and time.
  7. Select the type of magnitude in which to measure the supervision time “(Days / Hours)”.
  8. Define the supervision time.
  9. Select whether the alert is periodic or not.
  10. Select how you want to be notified.
  11. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Enable the “periodic” option to repeat the alert during the defined time. If you do not enable it, the alert will be deactivated when the time expires or when it is triggered.

Creating a stopped flowmeter alert#

This alert notifies you when the volume detected in the associated meters is zero during the supervision time. It is a notification-type alert and will not perform any automatic action on the system.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Stopped-meter alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select the meters to monitor. The drop-down list will only show meters that do not already have an alert of this type configured.
  5. Define the start date and time.
  6. Select the type of magnitude in which to measure the supervision time “(Days / Hours)”.
  7. Define the supervision time.
  8. Select how you want to be notified.
  9. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

This alert will start counting from the defined start date and time and will renew automatically when it runs out.

Battery alert#

Notifies you if the device (Atlas) battery drops below a certain threshold.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Battery alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select among the notification values, one or both at once:
  5. Low battery (The device may be incorrectly installed and cause a drop in the battery).
  6. Very low battery (The device is at a critical threshold and may not work correctly).
  7. Select the Atlas devices to which this alert applies.
  8. Select how you want to be notified.
  9. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Coverage alert#

Notifies you if the Atlas device's coverage drops below a certain threshold.

  1. Go to the “Alerts” section and click “Create alert”.
  2. Select the alert type “Coverage alert”.
  3. Set the alert name.
  4. Select among the notification values, one or both at once:
  5. Low coverage.
  6. Very low coverage.
  7. Select the Atlas devices to which this alert applies.
  8. Select how you want to be notified.
  9. Once all fields are completed, click “Save alert” to finish creating it.

Configuring the notification channels#

Regardless of the type of alert configured, the final step is to define who will receive the notification and through which medium.

Notification by platform and email#

This method is ideal for detailed notifications to multiple stakeholders.

  • Multiple selection: You can select several users (managers, irrigators, etc.) to receive the notification simultaneously.
  • Default user: The user creating the alert will always appear by default; however, they can be deselected if you do not want them to receive the notification.
  • Email notifications are not subject to a quota and will be sent each time the alert condition is met.

Notification by SMS#

The SMS channel is designed for urgent alerts that require immediate attention.

  • Only a single user can be selected to receive the SMS notification.
  • It is essential that the selected user's phone number is validated on the platform.
  • SMS notifications are subject to a limited sending quota. Once this quota is used up, the user will receive an email warning that they will no longer be notified through this channel.
